Happy 12/12/12!

LPOD-Dec12-12.jpg
image by Stefano De Rosa, Italy

Personally, I have not been confident that the sky still exists, having had cloud cover day after day, so Stefano's image from Italy is reassuring. Stefano writes, Early this morning I took this photo showing the lovely conjucntion above the eastern horizon of two naked-eye planets together with a bright crescent Moon. Near the left bottom of the frame is Mercury just over the colorful twilight glow while Venus is shining left of the Moon's sunlit crescent. The scene is completed by the silhouette of the Basilica of Saint John Bosco, located in Castelnuovo Don Bosco, some 20 km from Turin (Italy).

Alert: The two GRAIL satellites will soon complete their gravity mapping mission and will impact the Moon on Dec. 17 at approximately 2:28 p.m (apparently Pacific Standard Time). A teleconference at 1:30 p.m. EST, Thursday, Dec. 13, will provide information about the impacts. More info.
