Split Personalities
image by Peter Rosén, Stockholm, Sweden
I have always been fascinated by how the changing angle of sunlight reshapes the Moon's features. The same craters along the terminator can be very difficult to identify if just the rims are illuminated on one day and the crater floors are flooded with light on the second. Here is a side-by-side comparison of a scene close to the terminator and (almost) the same features during last full Moon; of course, it would have been nice to have pictures with similar librations. I have greatly enhanced the contrast in the rightmost full Moon picture to help recognize the same topography. Tycho stands out in both pictures, but mighty Clavius seems almost completely obliterated when the Sun is high in the lunar sky..
