Another Lunar Atlas?

SinusMediiLPOD.jpg
image by Stefan Lammel, Uxbridge, England. Is this sheet 1 of a new lunar atlas?

Stefan’s mosaic reminds me that I want a new photographic atlas of the Moon. A spiral bound one, about 8.5″ x 11″, for convenient use at the telescope and on a desk. I know what exists, and none satisfies me - or none keeps me from thinking about compiling a better one. I’ve dreamed of making an atlas, but I am not an imager. So my problem is finding a set of images with consistent scale and resolution, each having overlapping edges with neighboring sheets. The Consolidated Lunar Atlas could be used as an image source, for it meets most requirements (some image stitching would be necessary to create sheets covering the right areas), but its resolution isn’t as good as we are used to today. Perhaps the contributors to LPOD could image predefined areas with consistent scales and resolutions, creating the core of a new atlas. LTVT could be used to adjust scale and libration to a standard. I’ve talked before about the features I think are necessary and even (at the bottom of the page) suggested a sheet layout. Now I’d like to solicit your ideas and interest in contributing images. Visit the A New Atlas? page of The Moon Wiki and register your interest. Maybe we can create a new atlas that satisfies nearly everyone.
