Terminator Lover

LPOD-Aug10-10.jpg

Jim Phillips loves the terminator, pulling out of near shadows low features that are often missed. Here he visits Capuanus, a flooded crater presumably filled with the same lavas as nearby Palus Epidemiarum. The longest shadow on the crater floor points to the best known dome inside Capuanus. This is a relatively flat-topped structure that may be round in outline but seems to have straightish sides. Touching it immediately above is a slightly smaller diameter rise that is very low but may also be a dome. Another low but possible dome falls between the longest shadow of the crater floor and the next one to the right. An even less certain rise may exist where the northern end of the shadow curves slightly. This looks like the shadow is wrapped around the very gentle dome. A low but opposite lighting view confirms most of these domes. A different type of landform with a puzzle is the continuation of the Hesiodus Rille that abruptly stops near the upper left corner of the image. This rille seems to have had a likely continuation simply removed. Perhaps the few ridges define a crater that has younger lava than that cut by the rille. Finally, don't miss at upper right the two bulbous cones of shadow thrown by inconspicuous rim segments.
